Gavin Newsom’s Approval Rating Plummeting In California

It appears Californians have officially hit their breaking point with Governor Gavin Newsom. In a new poll conducted by the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, just 46% of California voters approve of Newsom's job performance. He was polling at a 64% approval rating in September. It doesn't take a political science expert to know that is what most people call a plummeting approval rating.

“These results should provide a strong warning to the Governor," IGS co-director Eric Schickler said in a release.

In 2018, Newsom won the California governor race with 61.9% of the vote. Newsom, who's facing a formidable recall effort, might find solace that the same poll also discovered that 45% of Californians oppose the recall effort and 19% are undecided.

"If the recall election does go forward, the state’s response to the pandemic needs to be seen as more successful for the Governor than it is now for him to be confident of the election outcome,” Schickler says.

On his handling of the pandemic, 31% said Newsom's doing a "excellent" or "good" job. It was at 49% in September. As for "poor" or "very poor" that number now sits at 43%. It was 28% in September.

Those polled were also asked about Newsom's handling of jobs and the economy, and 45% of them now rate his handling as "poor" or "very poor." That's up from 31% in September.

The full poll can be found here. It's bleak for Gavin.

Keep in mind the September poll was conducted before it surfaced that Newsom had enjoyed breaking his very own large gathering dining rules at one of the most expensive restaurants in the United States, before he dropped the hammer on Californians with draconian Thanksgiving rules and before gym owners had to battle elements just to keep their businesses afloat.

You could say Gavin Newsom has nobody to blame for his plummeting approval rating but himself. Pull yourself up by the bootstraps, big boy.
