Video: Notre Dame Batter Sends HR To The Moon Against Mississippi State

Notre Dame first baseman Niko Kavadas has been fighting to get back on track after a rocky start to the Super Regional series against Mississippi State. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior hit five dingers during regional play, but he’s struggled through the first couple of games of the Super Regional.

Sending a two-run homerun to the moon on Monday night against the Bulldogs is a great way to make up for the recent slump though. OK, Kavadas didn’t exactly hit the moon, obviously. But he did send one out of the stadium.

That’s what State gets for giving Kavadas something he could hit after a 3-1 start to the count. Up to that point, the Bulldogs have had a fantastic game plan to keep Notre Dame’s single-season homerun leader in check. But he was finally able to get ahold of one.

The two-run shot was the first homerun pitcher Landon Sims has given up all season.

At the time of the homerun, the Fighting Irish were down 5-11. That cut the deficit down to four runs in the top of the seventh during an elimination game. Still, that wasn't enough for Notre Dame to make a comeback.

Instead, Mississippi State (45-16) advances to Omaha for the College World Series, and the Fighting Irish (34-13) head home.
