Torey Lovullo Is Looking Forward To Making 'Wise Guy' Chris Russo Retire

If you're not a Chris "Mad Dog" Russo fan, then you're an Arizona Diamondbacks fan. Because D-backs manager Torey Lovullo is planning to send the longtime sports radio host to an early retirement.

On Monday — prior to Game 6 of the NLCS — Russo said he would retire "on the spot" from his XM Radio show if the Diamondbacks advanced to the World Series.

"To make a long story short, I've been wrong on Arizona from Day 1," Russo said on his show. "I'm stunned they beat Milwaukee, I thought they'd get swept by the Dodgers, I never thought they'd even go back to Philly for a Game 6.

"I'll try it one more time: I would not be stunned if they won , I would be floored... If they win the next two days, they win the next two games and win this series in seven games, if they win, I will retire on the spot."

One down, one to go.

The D-backs did, in fact, win Monday night — in decisive 5-1 fashion. Now, a win-or-go-home Game 7 is set for Tuesday night.

Chris Russo Vows To Keep His Word

Upon hearing about Russo's promise to retire, the D-backs skipper said, "I'm looking forward to that."

"There's nothing better than a wise guy New Yorker saying something and then having to chomp on those words," Lovullo said. "That's how I'm processing it. It will be great."

And maybe Russo's getting nervous. Because he took the opportunity on Tuesday to clarify his comments: If Arizona goes to the World Series, he said, he'll quit radio — but not TV.

So he'll still make his appearances on MLB Network's High Heat and ESPN's First Take.

D-backs rookie right hander Brandon Pfaadt gets the nod Tuesday against Phillies' lefty Ranger Suárez. Winner goes to Texas for the World Series. Loser goes home.

And if it's up to Lovullo, Chris Russo might just be going home, too.
