A Ridiculous Name-Related PGA Tour Record Was Tied This Week At The Valspar Championship

If you took a break from March Madness coverage on Thursday and tuned into any of the PGA Tour action at the Valspar Championship, you may have noticed a trend on the leaderboard. It had nothing to do with scores, but instead the sheer number of Kevin's teeing it up this week in Florida.

Kevin Streelman grabbed headlines as he took the lead on day one, but there were six other Kevins in the field - Kevin Roy, Kevin Aylwin, Kevin Daugherty, Kevin Tway, Kevin Yu, and Kevin Kisner.  The seven Kevin's tie a PGA Tour record for the number of players in a tournament field with the same first name.

The takeaway here is that someone, or some database, keeps up with player names at the PGA Tour.

Justin Ray, the stat guy in the golf world, pointed out the record-tying feat by the Kevin's. Him going the extra mile to dig up the other two instances - the 2012 Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the 2023 Fortinet Championship - where Kevins were also dominating the field was a nice touch.

If you saw this tweet and didn't immediately think of Kevin's mom in 'Home Alone' shouting ‘Kevin’ before fainting, then you haven't seen the movie enough.  That is sad given that it's the most re-watchable Christmas movie in the history of cinema.

Anyway, back to the Kevin's.

As things stand right now, three of the seven are comfortably inside the cut line heading into Friday's action. Some serious weather is set to hit Innisbrook throughout the afternoon which should push the cut line even higher, so maybe another one or two Kevin's can make it to the weekend.
