Mets' Yohan Ramirez & Carlos Mendoza Suspended For Throwing At Rhys Hoskins

Major League Baseball suspended New York Mets pitcher Yohan Ramirez and manager Carlos Mendoza on Sunday for their role in the belated retaliation against Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins.

Technically, Hoskins started this whole thing Friday afternoon when he hard slid into Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil to break up a double play. That led to tempers flaring, benches clearing, and this epic "cry about it" GIF.

On Saturday, Hoskins further angered the home fans at Citi Field by absolutely raking at the plate. By the seventh inning, Hoskins was 3 for 3 with a two-run homer.

So pitcher Yohan Ramirez decided to take matters into his own hands — firing a 94 mph fastball right behind Hoskins.

"Big leaguers don’t miss by 8 feet," Hoskins said after the game. "Whether or not it was on purpose or not, that’s not for me to decide. I really don’t care. But this game has had a way of policing itself for many, many, many years. So, let’s focus on doing it the right way if we’re going to do that."

It was almost certainly on purpose. And while retaliation is a typical, unwritten rule in baseball, this retaliation was more than a little delayed.

Even Mets broadcaster Ron Darling criticized the pitch, saying "the message was about two hours late."

And that's probably why MLB decided to step in. Ramirez and Mets manager Carlos Mendoza were both fined and suspended, with Mendoza serving his ban Sunday. Ramirez, though, is appealing his suspension.

The Brewers will try for the series sweep Sunday.
