Jordan Spieth Disqualified from Genesis Invitational For Signing An Incorrect Scorecard

The weekend at The Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles will take place without two of the tour's most popular players.

First, Tiger Woods withdrew from the tournament with an illness, later described as a fever and dizziness.

Then just a few hours later, the PGA Tour announced that Jordan Spieth would not make it to the end of the tournament as well. Spieth was disqualified for "signing an incorrect scorecard" on a hole where he made a 4, but signed for a 3. 

And as frustrating as it is, that technically violated PGA Tour rules, leading to his disqualification from the event.

Jordan Spieth Responds To Disqualification

Spieth took to X, formerly Twitter, late on Friday evening to respond to being disqualified.

"Today, I signed for an incorrect scorecard and stepped out of the scoring area, after thinking I went through all procedures to make sure it was correct. Rules are rules, and I take full responsibility. I love this tournament and golf course as much as any on @PGATOUR so it hurts to not have a run at the weekend. Really appreciated the support in LA @thegenesisinv"

Predictably, reactions from the golf world have been overwhelmingly negative. Fans repeatedly expressed frustration with the rules, with one describing it as the "dumbest…in all of sports."

It is frustrating that fans are now deprived of much of the excitement of the weekend at the Genesis Invitational. Patrick Cantlay leads the tournament by five strokes heading into round 3, with Tiger out and Spieth disqualified. Justin Thomas also missed the cut, despite the event's new limited cut format.

If the PGA Tour wants to fix its reputation with sports, particularly golf fans, eliminating this rule would be a great first step.
