Dawn Staley's Third National Title Earned Her Nearly $700k In Bonuses For The Year

Dawn Staley has a lot of reasons to be happy about winning the women’s college basketball national championship - like, 500,000 of them.

The South Carolina Gamecocks head coach led her team to an 87-75 win over Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday afternoon. By winning the championship, she cashed in on a hefty bonus written in her contract.

The win not only cemented her legacy as one of the best coaches in the sport, it also earned her an extra $500,000.

But that’s not the only bonus she achieved after finishing a perfect 38-0 season.

While guiding the Gamecocks to an undefeated season, Staley nearly earned an extra $200,000 just in incentives. That list of accomplishments and rewards includes:

  • $15,000 for winning 11 or more SEC regular season games (USC went 16-0 in conference play)
  • $15,000 for finishing in the Top 25 of the AP or Coaches Poll
  • $25,000 for winning Naismith National Coach of the Year
  • $25,000 for being named the SEC Coach of the Year
  • $100,000 for winning both the SEC Regular Season Championship and the SEC Tournament Championship

In total, she earned $680,000 in bonuses over the course of the season. Winning certainly has its perks!

Additionally, Staley’s win makes her just the fifth coach in the sport’s history to have won at least three national titles. Sunday afternoon was certainly one of the best of her life.
