Cam Newton Labels Vince Young College Football's Best QB Of 2000s

According to Cam Newton, Vince Young is the best college quarterback to play since the year 2000.

On his 4th and 1 podcast this weekend, Newton reacted to ESPN's rankings of collegiate QBs over the past 24 years. ESPN gave former Oklahoma signal caller Baker Mayfield the top spot. Cam disagreed because Mayfield never won a championship.

Newton came in at No. 2 on the list, followed by Vince Young, Tim Tebow, Joe Burrow, Deshaun Watson, Kyler Murray, Lamar Jackson, Marcus Mariota and Robert Griffin III.

"No. 1 in my list is Vince Young," Newton said. "The Rose Bowl. What he was able to do that game, no moment was ever too big for him."

Is Cam Newton Right About Vince Young?

Young — a College Football Hall of Famer — won a BCS National Championship with the Texas Longhorns in 2005.

And his performance against USC at the Rose Bowl was one for the record books. He finished the game with 267 passing yards and a staggering 200 rushing yards, along with three touchdowns. His third touchdown ended up being the game-winner as Texas won by three, 41-38.

During that year, he also earned the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year award and was a consensus All-American. But there is one thing Young doesn't have that those other guys do: a Heisman Trophy. He finished second in balloting to USC running back Reggie Bush — and, well, we all know how that turned out.

In addition to praising VY, Newton said he'd also put Johnny Manziel at the top because of his impact on the game. Manziel was a peculiar snub from ESPN's list, given his success at Texas A&M in 2012 and 2013.

One could also make an argument for Cam Newton himself to top the list of best collegiate quarterbacks since 2000.

In his National Championship season at Auburn, Newton threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns against just 7 interceptions. He ran for 1,473 yards and 20 TDs. With 50 total touchdowns, he averaged 3.6 per game.

Newton was named the 2010 SEC Offensive Player of the Year as well as the 2010 AP Player of the year, and he won the Heisman in a landslide.
