USMNT Overcomes Slow Start To Defeat Honduras In World Cup Qualifier, 4-1
The United States men's national team faced off against Honduras on Wednesday night in a qualifying World Cup match.
Honduras put some pressure on the American team by establishing a 1-0 lead after the 27th minute of play. The United States failed to answer before the break and required some adjustments from coach Gregg Berhalter to remedy extended issues with the team's preparedness — following a 0-0 dud against El Salvador and 1-1 draw with Canada on Sunday.
As reported by OutKick's Sam Amico, the team recently ousted midfielder Weston McKennie over violating the team's COVID protocols, leaving the team short of a key role player.
Sitting on a goose egg until 48 minutes into their contest against Honduras, and on the back of adjustments to the lineup made by Berhalter, the United States team scored their first goal of the evening. The Antonee Robinson score tied the match.
Approaching the 75th minute, FC Dallas' Ricardo Pepi put the U.S. up 2-1 after heading a score, followed by additional scores from Brenden Aaronson and Sebastian Lletget.
Coach Berhalter spoke on the team's performance and resilience in securing the win on Wednesday.
“We needed to compete,” commented Berhalter. “That was something that I was disappointed with. When they scored, instead of seeing that reaction that we’re used to, I think their heads went down a little bit. We needed to embrace what kind of game it was going to be.”
The United States is now tied for second place in the CONCACAF Qualifiers Octagonal.
