Mexican Soccer Team Punished For Fans Chanting Homophobic Slur

Mexico's men's soccer team has been hit with punishment after fans chanted a homophobic slur during two recent CONCACAF Nations League matches played in Denver, including one against the U.S. in which Mexican fans threw objects at players and chanted the slur.

FIFA decided the best punishment for the chanting was to force Mexico to play its first two home 2022 World Cup qualifiers in empty stadiums. The empty stadium matches will be played against Jamaica in September and Canada in October. The Mexican soccer federation was also hit with a whopping $65,000 fine over the incidents.

Mexican soccer official Yon De Luisa told Yahoo Sports in May that he's worried FIFA will take drastic actions if the fans return to the stands and start chanting the slur again. He believes FIFA could start making point deductions, calling matches forfeits, and disqualifying the team from tournaments if it still won't stop.
