Richard Sherman May Become Latest Former Great Player Headed To Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may look to add veteran cornerback Richard Sherman. With Sean Murphy-Bunting out due to a dislocated elbow and Carlton Davis not at full health due to a hamstring injury, the championship Buccaneers team and GM Jason Licht could shore up their secondary in the interim by signing the cerebral corner.

In three seasons with the 49ers, the five-time Pro Bowler accrued four interceptions and 116 total tackles. In 2019, Sherman received second-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl nod for his second season with the team. However, his 2020 campaign was reduced to five game because of a groin injury.

Sherman was officially released by the Bay Area team back in February 2021, and he began to garner interest from around the league until an unfortunate run-in with authorities back in July quelled that interest and put an asterisk on Sherman's free agency status.

The longtime corner appears to be in better health, both physically and mentally, since the incident and is back on the market. According to NFL.com's Tom Pelissero, Sherman cut his weight down to match his build from his Seattle days and could be a viable fill-in corner.

Sherman's production and speed may be a far cry from his noted days as leader of the Legion of Boom, but the situation in Tampa Bay would allow the corner a limited role to segue back into the league. It may also be his best shot at a Super Bowl-contending team.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense appeared anything but depleted against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday — picking off starting QB Matt Ryan three times to secure a 48-25 win.
