Patriots OC Josh McDaniels To Be Hired As Next Raiders HC
Rather than becoming the heir apparent in New England, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is moving on from Foxborough to become the next head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
McDaniels first served as head coach of the Denver Broncos from 2009-2010. He ended his first season going 8-8; winning his first six straight contests. He was fired the following season after a 3-9 start and his involvement in an investigation on the Broncos regarding videotaping an upcoming opponent's walkthrough practice session.
After departing from the Broncos, McDaniels served as quarterbacks coach for the St. Louis Rams in 2011 before making his return to the Patriots in 2012. McDaniels is a six-time Super Bowl champion as part of Bill Belichick's coaching staff.
A second opportunity to return to coaching came in 2018 when McDaniels interviewed for the Indianapolis Colts job after former coach Chuck Pagano's exit. McDaniels initially accepted the offer but withdrew his decision hours after reports relayed the news, which stirred a negative perception toward the coach.
Along the slate of candidates interviewing for the Raiders HC job was former Pats linebacker Jerod Mayo and Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh. Interim Raiders coach Rich Bisaccia, who took over the team after Jon Gruden's resignation in Oct., also interviewed for the position.
Until reports came in late Saturday on McDaniels' likelihood to land the job, rumors on Harbaugh's interest to end up in Las Vegas
Leading up to the announcement of McDaniels' hiring, the Raiders also revealed that Patriots executive Dave Ziegler has been hired as general manager, filling in for former GM Mike Mayock.
