Bears' Rookie QB Justin Fields Shows Out In Preseason Debut

Saturday's preseason game between the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins quickly turned into an exhibition of Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields — with fans in the Windy City hoping that the Ohio State product will yank the team out of quarterback limbo.

With former Bears experiment Mitch Trubisky departing for Buffalo, and decreased expectations surrounding Nick Foles' longevity on the Bears roster, all eyes were set on Fields to dazzle in his debut against Brian Flores' Miami Dolphins.

After two series played by Bears "QB1" Andy Dalton, Fields stepped in for the Bears offense and led the team to a 20-13 victory against the Fins. The dual-threat dynamic from Fields was on display: racking up 142 passing yards, 33 rushing yards and a combined two touchdowns.

His first touchdown of the preseason came on an 8-yard scramble out of a collapsing pocket; escaping to his left and evading defenders to rush in for the score.

Inching the Bears closer to a lead as they trailed the Dolphins, 13-10, in the third quarter, Fields then propelled the team over the mark with his first passing touchdown. In the final minutes of the third quarter, Fields found Bears tight end Jesse James for the 30-yard score, putting Chicago up 17-13.

Despite setting off his comeback in the second half, against Miami reserves buried in the depth chart, Fields' lack of turnovers, and managing of the game's momentum, kept the team ahead for the eventual win.

Justin Fields was drafted by Chicago with the No. 11 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Projected as a top-five pick in the first several waves of mock drafts, predictions of Fields joining the San Francisco 49ers with the No. 3 pick began to wane closer to draft night. After the 49ers selected North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, the Bears caught the falling Fields by trading with the Giants to jump up to pick No. 11. Chicago sent the No. 20 pick and three additional draft picks to New York.

With Andy Dalton still slated as Chicago's starting quarterback, Bears fans remain on notice regarding a potential QB change leading up to their Week 1 primetime matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
