Oklahoma Commit Makes Statement With 'Horns Down' Social Media Post
"Horns Down" may have inadvertently become the new "Suck It." Since the Big 12 instituted a policy to penalize teams for taunting Texas players with a "horns down" gesture, student athletes from rival Oklahoma are having a blast mocking the Longhorns and the silly policy. And now, recruits are getting in on the fun.
Gavin Sawchuk, a four-star running back in the 2022 class who recently committed to the Sooners, is the latest player to poke fun at Texas' feelings. Sawchuk flashed "horns down" while attending a car show last month, and the photo has since gone viral.
Though athletes across the Big 12 have goofed on the ruling, Oklahoma players past, present, and future have been the most active in mocking the hand gesture. Texas' rival has won seven of the last ten Red River Showdowns, including three straight, prompting an abundance of social media mockery.
Like D-Generation X before them, this crop of players doesn't like to be told they can't do something. Now, these players willingly flash the gesture whenever the opportunity arises.
Big 12 coordinator of officials Greg Burks spoke about the new policy during the conference's media day, per SI.com: “Let me put it this way, if you do ‘horns down’ to a Texas player, as an opponent, that’s probably going to be a foul."
"Suck It" has never been more appropriate.
