Covid-19 Hits Dabo Swinney In The Wallet

Dabo Swinney has agreed to forfeit two bonuses totaling $1.25M in savings for Clemson University as it deals with lost revenue due to Covid-19.

In a records request by USA Today, the paper uncovered an agreement between the coach and school that was deeper than the original announcement of a pay reduction. Previously it has been stated that Swinney would take a 13% pay cut -- while his assistants took a 10% drop.

The expanded findings show Swinney will give up a $1 million bonus that he was scheduled to earn as a retention payment, as well as forfeit a $250,000 raise. Both payments were scheduled for Jan. 1.

Clemson rewarded the uber-successful Swinney with a 10-year contract worth $93 million in April 2019, making him the highest paid coach in college football. He is 131-31 with two national championships during his tenure.

The cuts in pay have been far and wide in college football, also costing other sports. Our Greg Couch did a detailed story about the problems facing college athletics, outside of football, that is well worth the read. Find that story here.
