MLB Retroactively Suspends Braves' Marcell Ozuna, Making Him Immediately Eligible

Atlanta Braves' Marcell Ozuna is immediately eligible to play after his 20 game suspension from the MLB was retroactively applied to his time on administrative leave, ESPN's Jeff Passan reports.

Ozuna was arrested in May and charged with felony assault after Sandy Springs Police officers say they saw him choke his wife and throw her against a wall.

According to officers at the scene, Ozuna’s wife claimed the Atlanta Braves star threatened to kill her during a heated dispute “over an infidelity" at the time of his arrest — OutKick previously reported Ozuna's domestic violence arrest in May.

Ozuna's felony charges were eventually reduced to misdemeanor family violence charges and the outfielder agreed to enter into a pretrial diversion program to close out the case.

The suspension is retroactive to Sept. 10 and covers the final 24 days of the regular season while he was on administrative leave, costing him approximately $1.55 million of his $12 million salary, ESPN reports.

"Any instance of domestic violence is unacceptable, and we fully support the decision by the commissioner's office regarding Marcell," the Braves said. "We are encouraged to know that Marcell has accepted full responsibility for his actions and is taking the necessary measures to learn and grow from the situation."

ESPN reports that Ozuna was ordered to complete at least 200 hours of community service, take an anger management course, among other things. He was also placed on six months of supervision.

Ozuna missed the Braves' World Series run this year while dealing with his injury and the active case. He signed a four-year, $65 million contract with Atlanta this past February.
