Fans And Family Give Ozzy Osbourne Proper Sendoff With Hometown Funeral
Rest in peace, Ozzy
It's been just over a week since heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne's death on July 22, and on Wednesday in his hometown of Birmingham — where his career began and ended in a star-studded farewell show just weeks before his death — the Prince of Darkness was laid to rest.
Thousands of fans lined the streets of the city to catch a glimpse of the funeral procession for the late Black Sabbath frontman and solo artist.
The procession was led by a marching band that played some of the biggest songs from throughout Osbourne's legendary, decades-long career, including the Black Sabbath hit "Iron Man."
With a procession like that, you'd think that some kind of city dignitary had died, and in a way, that's kind of what happened.
Ozzy and the rest of Black Sabbath — guitarist Tony Iommi, bass player Terrence "Geezer" Butler, and drummer Bill Ward, all of whom played at the farewell show on July 5 — are regarded as heroes in Birmingham, and the city has some sites honoring them.
It's clear that it meant a lot to the people of Birmingham to tip their caps to Ozzy one last time.
Osbourne's family was, of course, on hand with his wife Sharon, son Jack, and daughters Kelly and Aimee on hand.
Also in attendance, per The New York Post, was Ozzy's son from his first marriage, Louis.
Sharon, Jack, Aimee, and Kelly laid flowers at a memorial to the late singer, and they were overwhelmed by the moment as fans chanted, "Ozzy."
There has been an outpouring of tributes to Osbourne, which just goes to show what an impact he made throughout his career.
Of course, he was a pioneer of heavy metal, but he also transcended music to become a pop-culture phenomenon.
We send our best to the Osbourne family today, and rest in peace, Ozzy.
