'Civil War' Is A Brutally Violent Movie That Will Shock Viewers In Unexpected Ways

Is "Civil War" a movie worth your time?

It's no secret that I've been excited for the movie with Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst, Nick Offerman and other recognizable faces ever since I saw the first trailer.

It looked absolutely fascinating, but would it do the one thing so many movies do these days:

Go woke and destroy itself?

Fortunately for all of you, I went to the theater and found out. Let's roll!

Is "Civil War" worth your time?

This movie is awesome. I'm saying it, and I'm not going to apologize for it. It's bloody, gory, brutal, violent, savage, unforgiving, unrelenting……and a ton of fun.

My biggest fear going into "Civil War" was that it would go woke and include a ton of political preaching. Fear not, I'm happy to report that's not the case. Are there some subtle political messages? For sure. Let's take a look at them (consider this a spoiler warning) and I think you guys can make your own takeaways (it's intentionally ambiguous as to which political party is in power and the side against it):

  • The sitting President stays for an unconstitutional third term.
  • There is massive inflation destroying America.
  • Sitting President eliminates the FBI.
  • The southern states and many western states are against the unconstitutional sitting government.
  • More liberal states are with the corrupt federal government.
  • There's a reference made to ANTIFA and a massacre. It's not clear if ANTIFA carried out the massacre or was the victim.
  • A scene where a guy murders a foreigner based on his birthplace.

Clearly, there are shots at both sides of the aisle. Fair enough. No complaints here, but that's also not the point of "Civil War." The point of the movie is just how brutal on a ground level war is.

The story unfolds through the lens of multiple journalists on the ground as anti-federal forces advance on Washington, D.C. for the climax of the movie.

I won't lie to you. There are some brutal scenes in this movie. Brutal. Jesse Plemons is amazing in it, but his short few minutes on screen are unbelievably difficult to watch. Your skin will crawl. You'll feel sick. You'll want to fast forward.

Yet, you can't look away. The movie is that captivating. Even in the most horrific moments, your eyes are glued to the screen.

I will also say the sound editing and cinematography are amazing. The crack of the rifles feels real. The execution scenes feel brutal. The tears of the young journalist cut deep. The ending freezes you.

Some will try to frame this movie through their preferred political lens. I'd encourage people to avoid that. It's not about your political views. It's a story about war and the failure of what society looks like at its most horrific level. How people are willing to kill when they feel other options have been eliminated.

Some people might claim I missed the message of the movie. I don't think I did. It's not liberal or conservative. It's not Republican or Democrat. It's a war movie about killing, and not just killing random people - killing your fellow citizens. It's 100 percent worth your time, and definitely let me know your thoughts if you've seen it at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
