American Sunisa Lee Takes Home Gold, As Simone Biles Watches

In the end, Simone Biles' decision to pull out of the Olympics opened up the opportunity for others to slide right in and write their own history and 18-year-old Sunisa Lee of St. Paul, Minnesota will now forever be known as an Olympic gold medalist after she won the individual all-around competition.

Lee, who will attend Auburn in the fall, went to Tokyo figuring Biles would win gold once again, but as we all now know, Biles quit the team all-around competition and now it's Lee who is the darling of the Olympics.

“Coming into this competition I didn’t even think I could be competing for a gold medal,” Lee told the media after today's final. “I was competing for a silver medal.”

With Lee's gold, Americans have continued their dominance in the all-around competition. The string of gold winners includes Carly Patterson in 2004, Nastia Liukin in 2008, Gabby Douglas in 2012, Biles in 2016 and now Lee in 2020/21.

As for Biles who needed a mental break, she's been busy on her social media channels pumping out content including congratulations to Lee. "CONGRATS PRINCESS 🤍✨✨ absolutely killed it!!! OLYMPIC CHAMPION RIGHT HERE !!! So so so beyond proud of you!!!!," Biles captioned a photo of the two teammates celebrating their silver medal after Biles quit.
