The Louisville Cardinals and the UCF Knights put on a thriller Friday night, but a pick-six scored by the Cards in the final minute of the game sealed the deal.
Just after the Knights’ offense got the ball back and with 24 seconds on the clock, Louisville freshman linebacker Jaylin Alderman intercepted UCF junior quarterback Dillon Gabriel and returned it 66 yards to score with 13 seconds left to lift the Cardinals to a 42-35 victory.
The game-clinching defensive score came just one play after Cardinals redshirt junior quarterback Malik Cunningham had a pass tipped and intercepted by UCF sophomore defensive lineman Tre’mon Morris-Brash.
Just after the pick-six and with five seconds left, the Knights attempted a hook and ladder from their own 28-yard line. The play wasn’t successful and Gabriel was tackled awkwardly as he tried to lateral the ball.
Orlando Sentinel’s Jason Beede reported Gabriel was back up and walking off to the medical cart on his own power after the play before riding the cart to the locker room, but visibly in pain.
The nature of Gabriel’s injury hasn’t been diagnosed yet, according to UCF head coach Gus Malzahn.
