Alex Smith is cleared for football activities. That’s a sentence I honestly never expected to hear/read/type when he went down with a gruesome leg injury in November of 2018 — and after that, amidst his 17 surgeries, and the possibility that his leg might have to be amputated — but he worked relentlessly to get here.
Deservedly, his family popped champagne to celebrate. His wife, Elizabeth, shared the video:
Whether or not Alex Smith makes it into a game again, and whether or not he performs at a high level, it is miraculous that he’s made it this far. What a triumph of will and determination.
Good for Alex and his family! He has been nothing but classy and professional his entire career. Best of luck to him in the future!
Absolutely incredible story of strength, courage and perseverance. When I watched his story on ESPN, I believed there was no way he’d ever be cleared to play again. That belief was strictly because of how awful the injury and subsequent infection was. Alex Smith is an inspiration and his wife is amazing too. His commitment to rehab and their commitment to each other are lessons all of us can learn so much from.
Can’t say it any better than Anthony and Kevin just did!!!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations Alex, always a class act, you led us to the superbowl and would have won it ! Ex Niner Faithful.
Absolutely right, Dan!! Former Niner STH.
Congrats To Alex, but look closely at his leg. I’m only a Juris Doctor, but his leg doesn’t look like a football leg anymore.
I’m a fan of strong resilient people like Alex.
(btw – Dan Snyder wants to make Smith the GM 🤷♀️)
Great to see him back but unfortunately won’t be the same Alex Smith.

I agree. But, I think another factor will come into play that will help Alex Smith- no one will want to be the one to take him out. We see this with Tom Brady. He is essentially bubble wrapped due to the respect players have for him and his accomplishments as well as the referee protection. I think Alex Smith has earned the respect of his fellow NFL players and they will be very careful with his legs.
Think we all figured that out geez
