Urban Meyer To The Jaguars? Hey, Don't Laugh

If Urban Meyer returns to coaching, and he just might, it may not happen in the college ranks. Instead, the Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to move on from coach Doug Marrone, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media ... and guess who they are eyeing as a replacement?

Before you laugh off the idea of the former Ohio State and Florida coach returning to the sideline with a losing NFL franchise, consider Rapoport also reported that Meyer "has been lining up a staff and telling people he's close to in the football community that he expects to land in Jacksonville."

In other words, Meyer wants to get back into coaching, and he may be willing to do it with a team that currently sports a 1-14 record. Of course, the Jaguars are also a team that owns the No. 1 pick in the draft and the rights to select Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

So that may be the only temptation Meyer needs to be nudged toward the job.

As for Marrone, it's been a long season, and just three short years after leading the Jaguars to the AFC Championship game, no less. But when you lose 14 straight, and a coach like Meyer is out there and said to be interested, well, it may be time for a change. Along with that, Marrone really only had the one really good season. Overall, he sports a 23-42 record in Jacksonville.

"If Meyer is not the eventual choice, or decides to stay retired, Jacksonville is expected to look hard at the offensive side of the ball," Rapoport reported. "Ohio State coach Ryan Day, whose team is currently set to face Alabama in the NCAA National Title game, is also set to receive interest from the Jaguars."
