Urban Meyer, Jaguars Apologize To Fans For Crummy Start

Videos by OutKick

Urban Meyer is probably longing for the days when his team could bully Rutgers and spend minimal time game planning for the buzz saw that is Bowling Green. After an 0-2 start to his NFL coaching career, the 57-year old ball of stress finds himself apologizing to Jacksonville fans and pleading for patience.

“Hang in there with us. We’re going to get better. The one thing about Jacksonville and the 904, go to sleep knowing there’s not going to be any group working harder to get this thing flipped,” said Meyer post game.

The prospect of flipping the script seems easier said than done. Through two weeks, the Jags have been outscored 60-34, including a loss to expected basement dweller Houston.

Meyer’s biggest source of hope, first overall pick Trevor Lawrence, struggled mightily on Sunday. He completed less than half of his pass attempts and totaled just 118 yards through the air while throwing two picks against one touchdown. Meyer’s Ohio State quarterbacks often accounted for 118 yards in a quarter. But this isn’t Columbus, and Denver’s defense is a bit more stout than Maryland’s.

Despite the rough start, Meyer remains optimistic: “I’ve seen nonsense seep into organizations when you’re 2-0. I guess I haven’t seen it when you’re 0-2, but I’ve seen it when you lose a game. We can’t allow that. And the good thing is I don’t see that happening. I told the players and staff: ‘That’s the one thing that will not be tolerated with the Jags, is nonsense.’ I see zero point zero of it. It’s a bunch of good players, good guys and coaches working their tails off.”

Jags fans will soon have their patience tested yet again. A home date with the undefeated Cardinals looms next Sunday afternoon.
