Upon Further Review, Game-Losing Penalty By The Giants Was The Wrong Call

Videos by OutKick

At the tail end of miscues by the New York Giants that cost them a win against Washington on Thursday night was an offsides penalty by DT Dexter Lawrence. The flag on Lawrence became the peak of the team’s luckless start to the season, but it now sounds like Lawrence was an innocent man.

Longtime Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes announced on Twitter that people inside the Giants organization confirmed that the officials got the call wrong against Dexter Lawrence — sending Giants fans into a frenzy over Thursday night’s heartache.

With seconds left for one last play, WFT kicker Dustin Hopkins attempted a 48-yard game-winning field goal and missed when it sailed right. Had the game ended there, the Giants would have won, 29-27, and improved to a 1-1 record. Lawrence was called for offsides and it offset the Hopkins miss — which allowed the placekicker to retry from a shorter distance and seal the victory.

Lawrence took on the blame after the loss, but sounded confident that the play was mistaken by the officials.

I’m supposed to move when the ball moves,” commented Lawrence. “Obviously, I gave it to the ref to make a decision to think that I moved before the ball moved. My job is to get off and attack whoever is in front of me.”

By the end of the contest, viewers couldn’t full chock the loss to Lawrence after watching the Giants’ uninspired offensive game plan, several missed touchdowns and sub-par performance by the secondary that allowed WFT’s Taylor Heinicke to ball out.
