University of Wisconsin Removes ‘Racist’ Rock Over 1925 Newspaper Headline

A 42-ton boulder believed to be two billion years old was removed Friday from the University of Wisconsin main campus after the school’s Black Student Union leadership determined the rock was a racist symbol due to a 1925 newspaper headline.

Chamberlin Rock, named after a former university president, was lifted from its resting spot and moved to university land southeast of Madison where it will live out its life. The 1925 headline in the Wisconsin State Journal, ‘Dig up N—erhead,’ is believed to be the only time the rock was mentioned by that name, historians say.

But the Black Student Union said that was one too many mentions and the rock will always have a racist history. They said it was time for the boulder to go and $50,000 was raised through private donations to do just that.

“This moment is about the students, past and present, that relentlessly advocated for the removal of this racist monument,” Juliana Bennett, a senior and a campus representative on the Madison City Council, told the Associated Press. “Now is a moment for all of us BIPOC students to breathe a sigh of relief, to be proud of our endurance, and to begin healing.”

In November, students told a campus planning committee that the rock was a “daily reminder of the injustices, past and present, that students of color face on campus.”

The rock is said to have been carried by glaciers from near Canada and dropped on land that would eventually become the University of Wisconsin campus. Ice receded 12,000 years ago and BOOM, there’s a massive rock.

“I see this as offering the next generation of students something to build off of,” said UW–Madison senior Nalah McWhorter, who led the fight to remove the rock. “We got this project going, and now the next round of students can continue to work on the other demands and come up with other ideas. We hope this movement and this momentum carries on.”

And just like that, onto the next demand.

  1. So now even a rock is racist. I guess that if I write an article and give your BMW an ‘offensive’ description, it has to go. Makes sense :). Actually I’m kinda happy that it took $50K from a bunch of idiots to get the rock moved. Wish it would have been $500K.

    • They won’t. After they graduate with given grades in Minority Studies they will go on to be black activists. They will contribute nothing of value to society at large. How many blacks in our history have made substantive contributions to all Americans?

  2. “ now the next round of students can continue to work on the other demands and come up with other ideas.”

Come up with other ideas? I read that as “find more creative ways to be offended”.

As Clay talks about with the mascot renaming, there will never be enough. There is no negotiating. They get a rock today, they will be after a mountain tomorrow.

  3. Thank god someone finally stood up to this rock and said “NO MORE” will it be allowed to taunt students on campus. For years the rock would make monkey noises and other degrading things towards students of color and I am just so grateful that finally the students have had enough. It’s only fair that they move this bigoted boulder to a place where it won’t be able to bother anyone ever again. Or at least move it to where it will only bother white students. We should all be proud knowing that no longer will these sedimentary rocks of hate go unchecked because we have brave student groups willing to risk life and limb to have them moved. Amen to that.

  4. They’ll find something else to be offended by, probably by anyone who isn’t black. Then they’ll be offended by someone who is lighter or too dark. White people who pander to the victim class are pathetic.

  5. How does the dumbest subset of 13% of the nation’s population able to get images removed from rice boxes and rocks removed from university campuses? Why are these low IQ campus babies allowed to yield any power? I’m sure spineless, guilt-ridden weasels in power have something to do with it. Meanwhile, 50 black people were gunned down on city streets last night by black gang members, and these quota clowns won’t say one word about them.

    • The white atheist Bernie Bro professor class at UW-Madison pretends to be concerned about the 13, when underneath it all, it’s about the Marxist Revolution.

If the professor class actually cared about 13, then they would oppose open borders. But they don’t. And in their silence, they are telling you something
