UCF Closing In On Gus Malzahn, Offers Head Coaching Position

Gus Malzahn is still looking for a new landing spot after he was fired by Auburn back in December. According to a couple of surfacing reports from Sunday night, we could soon learn where that new destination will be.

Both The Orlando Sentinel and Auburn Undercover are reporting that UCF has offered Malzahn its vacated head coaching position. Josh Heupel, the now former coach, followed athletic director Danny White to Tennessee last month.

There's already a connection between Malzahn and UCF, too. White's replacement as the university's athletic director, Terry Mohajir, was at Arkansas State at the same as Malzahn back in 2012.

It was Malzahn's first college head coaching gig, and he rewarded the Red Wolves with a 9-3 record that season.

That familiarity may be enough to help Malzahn land in Orlando. His history as a fairly successful SEC coach (68-35 record) could be appealing to recruits, and his offensive style and philosophy would fit well with returning quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

According to 247Sports, Mohajir is done with interviews, and he hopes to name a new coach by next week.

This is definitely a situation worth monitoring, so stay tuned for more updates.
