Two Takeaways After LSU's Spring Game

The LSU Tigers concluded their spring season during Saturday's game in front of 12,500 fans. Here are two observations from the game:

QB Room

Each quarterback played two quarters, one with each team — quarterbacks Max Johnson, Myles Brennan, TJ Finley and Garrett Nussmeier are vying to become the LSU’s starter this Fall.

Four-star freshman Nussmeier showed his potential, along with his rookie mistakes, but went on to finish the scrimmage 15-of-25 passing for 132 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.

Nussmeier seemed to make up for it when he found wide receiver Koy Moore from 4 yards out in the waning seconds, securing the 23-14 White team victory.

LSU's four quarterbacks combined for 512 yards in passing offense as they rotated between the two teams and combined for four touchdowns.

Senior Myles Brennan completed 12-of-20 attempts for 116 yards with one touchdown pass.

The Advocate reports he was the most efficient of the four signal-callers in the first half. "He was poised, accurate and made few errors," the article reads. "The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Brennan seemed like he could make all the throws after coming back from a season-ending abdominal muscle tear in 2020."

Sophomore Max Johnson was 11-of-17 passing for 180 yards and a game-high two touchdown passes, while sophomore T.J. Finley was 10-of-18 for 84 yards.

Improved Secondary

The Advocate reports that new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones took over a major project when Orgeron hired him in February.

"The Tigers recorded the program's historic lows in scoring defense and total defense in their one season under former defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, and many of the mistakes boiled down to miscommunication and missed assignments that resulted in broken plays that went for big gains," the article states.

During Saturday's spring game, the White team struck first on its second drive of the scrimmage, ending a 38-yard drive with a 50-yard field goal from placekicker Cade York to lead 3-0.

The White team's defense continued on the next drive when cornerback Raydarious Jones intercepted Finley's pass on 3rd-and-7 to register the first turnover in the game.

The Tigers will turn their attention to the start of the 2021 football season which kicks off on Sept. 4 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California against UCLA.
