Trevor Lawrence Defends Dabo Swinney After "Football Matters" T-Shirt Photo

Given that there's been no major American team sports since March and there won't be for at least another 4-6 weeks (as unlikely as it seems right now, maybe MLB figures out the money and returns before the NBA, which resumes July 31st), an overwhelming proportion of the sports conversation right now is about the intersection with the ongoing racial justice protests across America. Drew Brees found that out the hard way last week, and there was also some controversy online when Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was photographed wearing a "football matters" t-shirt (above).

Swinney's quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the presumptive first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, defended his coach:

Swinney is so indispensable that there's no way his career would be in danger over this -- he's at worst the second best active college football coach in America, and it would be a fascinating debate as to whether you'd rather have him or Nick Saban for the next decade -- but people have lost jobs over the word "matter" in the past week. Grant Napear, the TV voice of the Sacramento Kings, lost his job after saying "All lives matter" in a tweet. Stan Wischnowski, a top editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer, resigned after 20 years at the paper following a headline that said, "Buildings matter, too."

What are your thoughts?
