Leylah Fernandez Completes Dazzling Run To US Open Final

If you're a 19-year-old female and Canadian, you may want to give this US Open thing a try.

After all, Leylah Fernandez has advanced to the Open final after staving off Aryna Sabalenka 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4 on Thursday night.

That makes Fernandez the second 19-year-old Canadian to reach the final in three years. Bianca Andreescu was the other, and she won the title in 2019.

Now, Fernandez will get a shot to do the same when she plays either Emma Raducanu or Maria Sakkari on Saturday. (By the way, Raducanu is only 18.)

So how did Fernandez do it? Well, by stunning former US Open champions Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber, as well as knocking off No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina. A tall task for an everyday teen, but clearly not for Fernandez.

Frankly, it's really not important who Fernandez plays next. If she plays like she has so far, emerging as the champion shouldn't be a problem. And she's already ready to go.

"It doesn't matter," she told reporters when asked if she has a preference on who she meets next. "I just want to play a final right now."
