Yankees Seemingly Get Good Injury News, For Once

It's been a roller coaster of emotions for the New York Yankees and their fans over the past week.

Just a few days ago, news broke that two of the team's stars and most important players, Aaron Judge and Gerrit Cole, were facing significant injury questions.

Initially, it was reported that Cole would be out for 1-2 months. But a scheduled visit to famed surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles raised speculation that he was dealing with a UCL tear that would necessitate Tommy John surgery.

But in an incredibly fortunate twist, ElAttrache confirmed on Thursday that Cole could rehab the injury with rest. Instead of a 12-16 month surgery recovery period, Cole could miss as little as 1-2 months of the regular season. Not great news, but better than the alternative.

Then on Friday, the Yankees got good news on Aaron Judge too.

Aaron Judge Resumes Swings After Delay

According to the New York Post, Judge is set to return to taking swings on Friday, an encouraging sign for his availability for Opening Day.

"I think just cage work today,’’ Judge said. "The main goal is to be game-ready for Opening Day [in Houston on March 28]. I’m just gonna work towards that."

After undergoing an MRI, Judge said that it was purely precautionary, with no need to take risks during spring training. He also reported "feeling pretty good," while saying he might be able to return to game action sooner rather than later.

Judge being healthy for the start of the season would be a huge boost for the Yankees, as they're expected to be in a tight battle for the American League East. Cole's absence won't help, but a 1-2 month delay wouldn't be the season-killer that Tommy John represents.

In a week of what seemed to be bad news in the Bronx, at least there's something to be hopeful about.
