Wyndham Clark Takes Nonsensical Shot At LIV Golf After Disappointing Opening Round At The Masters

Wyndham Clark did not have his best stuff in his first go around Augusta National during Thursday's opening round of the Masters, but that didn't stop him from taking an unsolicited shot at LIV Golf after his round.

Clark, making his Masters debut this week, put together a strong opening nine holes making the turn at three-under, but stumbled mightily on the second nine posting a four-over 40. While he certainly didn't play himself out of the tournament, he'll begin the second round eight shots behind day-one leader Bryson DeChambeau.

Given that DeChambeau plays for LIV Golf, Clark's mind wandered towards the Saudi-backed circuit and its 54-hole format while speaking to reporters after his first round 73 on Thursday.

"Yeah, we’ve got 54 holes," Clark said when asked if the eight-shot deficit was gettable. "In LIV Golf they only play 54, so I like my chances. We’ve got a lot of golf left. As you can see, someone shot seven-under. I could do that tomorrow."

Clark's comments are strange for a couple of different reasons.

First and foremost, Clark won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year, which was shortened to a 54-hole event due to weather. Secondly, Clark has admitted to meeting with LIV bosses and listening to offers from the breakaway circuit, but ultimately turned them down. Those admissions came during the Pebble Beach Pro-Am as well, which makes the situation even more odd.

Clark has arguably been the second-best player in the world this year, only behind Scottie Scheffler. After picking up a win at the Wells Fargo in May 2023, Clark followed that up by winning the U.S. Open the following month in Los Angeles.

Clark was ranked 90th in the world ahead of the 2023 Masters and has jumped all the way to the No. 4 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking in a year's time.
