Tony Romo Promises To Bring Back One Of His Trademark Broadcast Gifts During Super Bowl

Tony Romo has lately been limiting his predictions on the games he's broadcast with partner Jim Nantz for CBS Sports, which is kind of odd because that's one of his trademark gifts he showed once he stopped playing quarterback and joined the booth as an analyst.

Seems he was following some professional advice from folks at CBS and also evolving, as Romo mentioned Tuesday.

Here Come Tony Romo Predictions

But for Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday?

"You want me to bring it out this week?" Romo asked of his penchant for predicting plays.

And, of course, everyone wants that, right?

"Alright," Romo said, "I'll bring it out."

Excellent. Romo promises to tell you what's about to happen before the Chiefs or 49ers snap the football. And it's easy to phrase it that way because Romo was once so prolific and proficient at predicting the coming play, the practice became a thing on Google.

Go ahead, Google Tony Romo predictions. And good luck reaching the end of that near limitless search.

And here's a prediction that made Romo smile when it was suggested he could make it: Predict the actual marriage of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift.

Romo Jokes About Kelce And Swift

Romo has been joking about the subject for a while now.

All those times he has repeated on air that Travis Kelce is Taylor Swift's husband, which got the Swifties all bent out of shape, Romo was just messing around on his CBS Sports broadcasts.

"It was a joke," he repeated.

But not enough folks got it. Some media critics lambasted Romo for being "unprepared" because he didn't know Kelce and Swift are just dating.

They obviously don't recall when Romo was dating pop star Jessica Simpson. Some analyst said he was her husband.

Jessica Simpson Days Lead To Joke

So the running joke is that Romo is now on the other end of the mislabeled union.

"You're doing TV for three hours live or three-and-a-half hours live so they can't always get your humor," Romo said. "Some people are tired watching a game. They don't want to hear a lot of noise. Some people are animated. It's the biggest game ever. They want more energy from somebody.

"It just depends on the mode and the mood people are in. To me, I like to provide levity sometimes. And some people get it. And I kind of talk like I'm talking to my friends where I kind of sit there and I go, ‘Let’s see if they get it? And if they don't, they don't."

So here's the perfect opportunity for Romo: He can combine his uncanny ability to make in-game predictions and perhaps make his joke about Swift and Kelce seem like a prophecy.

"I root for them to get married," Romo said. "Because, they're not married, guys. I was joking."

Romo Regard For Mahomes Obvious

On a more serious note, Romo is spending the days leading up to this game doing a lot of extra homework on the quarterbacks and the offenses the two Super Bowl teams boast.

Listening to Romo for even a short time, it becomes obvious he's highly, highly impressed with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

"Patrick Mahomes, I call him the standard now," Romo said. "That's my nickname for him. He's the standard that all other quarterbacks are going to be valuated by. And for them to get to their dreams, they got to go through this guy.

"And that's really an incredible honor to be that guy. [Tom] Brady was for a really long time. Patrick has taken that mantle. And I could not be happier. This is a once in a generation talent. But also a once in a generation person. He is such a unique, honest, genuine human being that you can't but love the fact he's the face of the NFL."

That, Romo is convinced, presents problems for San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy.

"One of the hardest things for Brock Purdy this week will be the nerves coming into this," Romo said. "Mahomes will have nerves, too. But Mahomes hasn't thrown an interception in like six or seven straight playoff games. He knows how to win. He's in that golden spot in his career where he has all the knowledge he's gained from all his experience while still playing at a really high level. That makes him really hard to beat.

"For Purdy he's got two factors mentally he's got to overcome in this game: One, will be the nerves early in the game. Two, will be the aura and mystique of Mahomes. Because you know this dude is the man. It's almost like going against Michael Jordan. You expect him to be great. So if you don't score, you feel like you're losing, where other games you're thinking ‘We’re the team. We're going to go and figure it out.'

"But that mystique around Mahomes, it's real. And late in the game, I see quarterbacks all the time kind of go into a shell sometimes. They aren't the same person or themselves because they expect the other guy on the other side to be great."
