Tennis Star Nick Kyrgios To Appear In Australian Court On Charges Of Assault
Nick Kyrgios, the hot tempered, often irreverent tennis player, has advanced to the Men's Quarterfinals at Wimbledon. He is also facing assault charges in his home country of Australia, after his ex-girlfriend, Chiara Pissari, filed charges stemming from an incident that occurred in December of 2021.
Kyrgios and Pissari had started dating in July of 2020, but broke things off after an argument last October, that led to an altercation in a hotel that led to police being called. After the incident, Pissari posted on Instagram a photo she took that apparently show Kyrgios naked in bed with another women.
Kyrgios, if found guilty, could spend up to two years in an Australian jail. "It’s in the context of a domestic relationship,” his lawyer Jason Moffett said in a statement. “The nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr. Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously. Given the matter is before the court, he doesn’t have a comment at this stage."
Kyrgios has been fined twice during this year's Wimbledon. In the first round, he was fined $10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct, and more recently in the third round, where he was fined $4,000 in his match versus Stefanos Tsitsipas. He will face Christian Garin later today in the quarterfinals.
