Tampa Teen Bests Usain Bolt Record In 200M
Usain Bolt has a great track name, and that will never change. But he'd better watch out when it comes to his world records.
That's because Tampa, Fla., teen Erriyon Knighton has already eclipsed Bolt's 200m time for the under-18 category. Knighton, 17, ran the race in 20.11 and stunned 100m Olympic favorite Trayvon Bromell in the process.
Knighton's time at the American Track League event in Jacksonville shaved 0.02 seconds off Bolt's mark, set back in 2003. Knighton told reporters he has a great deal of respect for Bolt and Bromell, "but I brought my A-game today."
As FloTrack noted, "Knighton accomplished this feat just a year after posting a then-career best of 20.33 at just 16 years old."
And Knighton was just 16 when he signed a deal with Adidas and turned pro. So yes, Bolt is still the main man in the modern era of track. But it appears Knighton is rounding the bend and closing in.
