Stephen A. Smith Demands UVA Fire Tony Bennett During Clown Rant

Stephen A. Smith thinks Virginia should dump Tony Bennett.

The Cavaliers were rocked by Colorado State in a 10-seed play-in game Tuesday night after sneaking into the tournament. Many people - myself included - did not feel they belonged. They proved they didn't as the Rams hammered them.

Yet, Stephen A. seems to think it's time to demolish the program and start over. Yes, Stephen A. Smith believes UVA should fire one of the best coaches in the country. After all, it's just so easy to find another national champion coach!

Stephen A. Smith says Tony Bennett should be fired.

"It's not funny. I take no joy in saying this, but if it were me, I'd fire him. Strictly because of being boring. Literally. I'm not questioning his ability as a coach at all. He's a national champion for crying out loud. I'm not questioning his ability to coach, but you cannot be that boring, that unappealing for so long and get away with it," Smith said on "First Take" Wednesday following the bloodbath.

I understand Stephen A. Smith and the business he's in. He has to say wild things in order to generate interest, but this is an absurd take.

When a school finds a guy who has proven he can win a national championship, it must do whatever is necessary to hang onto him.

Let's look at some of Tony Bennett's accomplishments since taking the job in Charlottesville:

  • Won a national title
  • 364–136 record
  • Wins 72.8% of games
  • Six regular season ACC titles
  • Two ACC tournament titles
  • Has missed the NCAA tournament just once since the 2013-2014 season

Demanding Tony Bennett be fired is a clown take if I've heard one. Furthermore, boring basketball can win, and claiming boring basketball isn't okay is a sign of someone who doesn't know the sport. It's not guaranteed to win, but grinding opponents with a slow half-court strategy can absolutely get it done.

It just didn't work as expected this season for Bennett and the Cavaliers.

So, yeah, fire one of the most successful coaches of the past 25 years. What a great take from the ESPN star. Let me know if you agree with my takedown at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
