Serena Quits Wimbledon Because Of Ankle Injury
Serena Williams was forced to retire from her first-round match with Aliaksandra Sasnovich at Wimbledon on Tuesday.
EuroSport reports the seven-time former champion started the match with tape around her right thigh and left ankle, and was close to top form as she blitzed into a 3-1 first set lead but then dropped her serve in the fifth game.
She then appeared to slip and then limped towards her chair and called for the trainer before leaving the court for treatment.
Williams returned and was visibly in major discomfort and broke down in tears as she was unable to move around the court. At 3-3, Williams collapsed to the grass before signaling that she would be unable to continue, EuroSport reports.
She wasn't the only one to leave the court early on Tuesday, though. In fact, it was actually the second major Centre Court injury of the day.
Adrian Mannarino also slipped and was forced to retire after suffering an injury at Wimbledon. ESPN reports the injuries occurred in back-to-back matches at Centre Court, with Mannarino's coming first.
Mannarino slipped at the start of the fifth set against Roger Federer with the match locked at 2 sets apiece, EuroSport reports.
The article states that Mannarino fell awkwardly toward the end of the fourth set and despite attempting to continue following treatment, he was forced to withdraw.
"It is awful and shows one shot can change the outcome of a match, season, career and I wish him all the best and hope we see him back quickly,” Federer said of his opponent. "This is obviously terrible that it's back-to-back matches and it hits Serena as well. Oh my God, I can't believe it."
