Seahawks Fans At Local Bar Break News Of Ryan Grubb Leaving Alabama For Seattle Job While Drinking A Few Beers

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald hired his new offensive coordinator on Friday night, with the news breaking from a local Seattle bar, technically. Two days after declaring that he was the OC at Alabama, Ryan Grubb was spotted having a few beers with the Seahawks brass after accepting the job.

It was a wild Friday night for Seattle fans at the local bar Dino's Pub, which is in the same area as the Seahawks facility. After one social media user posted a fuzzy photo of what looked to be Alabama OC Ryan Grubb, speculation started to grow that it was actually him, and that he was having dinner with new head coach Mike Macdonald and the Seahawks general manager.

As we've seen with X/Twitter during past coaching searches, the overwhelming power of a fanbase can be fun to watch in action. One by one, pictures of the group started to show up on social media from the same bar, but from different angles. This went from ‘it might be him’, to these guys were out celebrating the fact that Grubb had accepted the job.

It wasn't the media who technically broke the story of him taking the Seahawks OC position, it was local fans in the area. Just two hours after the initial photo was posted to social media, sources told OutKick that Grubb had accepted the Seahawks OC job and would be staying in the Seattle area.

I spoke with one of the fans who took the picture, Justin Monwai, who said he saw reporters on social media break the news after a number of folks at Dinos Pub started posting pictures of the Seattle brass at the pub. It's fair to say that the Seahawks organization wasn't too worried about being out in public with their new offensive coordinator, especially just sitting out in the open with the rest of the patrons.

After serving as the offensive coordinator for Kalen DeBoer during his time as a head coach, most recently at Washington, Grubb had to make the tough decision as to whether or not he wanted to transition to the NFL. Speaking with sources in Tuscaloosa late Friday night, Grubb had spoken with folks at Alabama, most importantly Kalen DeBoer, and told him he would be heading off to the NFL.

What does this mean for Alabama? Well, the coaching carousel in college football continues, with one of the most prominent assistant coaching jobs in the country now open. This could be an easy move for DeBoer if he decides to promote from within, as the Alabama coach might have JaMarcus Shephard and Nick Sheridan serve as co-OC's. It was reported earlier today by OutKick that OL coach Scott Huff could be joining Ryan Grubb in Seattle.

This is also the second time Ryan Grubb has turned down the chance to be the offensive coordinator at Alabama. Before Kalen DeBoer was hired in Tuscaloosa to replace Nick Saban, Grubb was courted by Saban in the early months of 2023 to take the same role. He ultimately turned down Saban, staying at Washington and helping guide the Huskies offense to a national championship appearance behind Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback.

Grubb had been on the road recruiting for Alabama recently, and spoke at the Signing Day celebration on Wednesday in Tuscaloosa, where he told the crowd he was their new OC. It should be noted that the school never officially released any type of statement confirming the news, but it's not as if Grubb had been around long enough to form any type of relationships.

On a day where we witnessed Bill O'Brien officially resign as the OC at Ohio State to take the Boston College head coaching position, and then Chip Kelly stepping down at UCLA to take O'Brien's spot on the Buckeyes staff, nothing should shock folks any longer.

The news of Ryan Grubb potentially taking the Seattle job had been widely reported on OutKick throughout the week, with sources informing us late in the evening that Grubb was at the team facility, along with a source adding that he could take the job sometime Friday. Turns out, while Alabama fans thought this situation was put to bed at the signing day celebration, Grubb was potentially deliberating on whether to actually stay.

But at the end of a long week of speculation and grand gestures, it turned out to be a few folks enjoying a cold beer on Friday night that sent the white smoke into the air, signaling a change was coming for fans in both Seattle and Tuscaloosa.

The power of social media, my goodness.
