Rangers Rookie Matt Rempe Is Making Waves, Throws Hands With Flyers Tough Guy Nick Deslauriers

New York Rangers rookie Matt Rempe is having one of the wildest first few games in the NHL in recent memory and that continued on Saturday afternoon.

The 6-foot-8 21-year-old has been a bull in a china shop since making his NHL debut less than a week ago, and that trend continued on Saturday against the Blueshirts' Metropolitan Division rival Philadelphia Flyers.

Rempe had 22 PIMs in just three games, and it didn't take him too long to drop the mitts with Flyers tough guy Nick Deslauriers, one of the league's most prolific pugilists.

And, oh man, was he able to hold his own. This turned into one of the best fights of the season.

The funny thing about this — which as I said is probably the best fight we've seen in the NHL this season — is that I had just finished writing about the fight in the college hockey ranks between Arizona State's Tucker Ness and Alaska Fairbanks' Dawson Bruneski when these two started dancing.

What a 24-hour stretch for on-ice fisticuffs.

If you happened to be watching warm-ups you would have known that this one was coming, and it sure seems like the ESPN broadcast crew was prepared. Deslauriers could be seen having a chat with Rempe before the game.

Rempe now has 27 penalty minutes through three games and change. That, of course, means his actual ice time is limited, but it has been quite some time since a younger player has made a first impression like this.

He made his NHL debut at MetLife Stadium in the Rangers' Stadium Series game against the New York Islanders and had racked up one second of ice time before dropping the gloves with New York Islanders tough guy Matt Martin.

Welcome to the NHL, kid…

But wait, there's more. Rempe caused a stir two games later with this brutal — and kind of questionable — hit against the New Jersey Devils' Nate Bastian.

Jeez. This is wild. Keep an eye on this kid for sure.
