Two People Dead, Hundreds More Arrested In France After PSG Wins Champions League
Paris looked like a war zone after PSG topped Inter Milan in the Champions League Final.
Paris Saint-Germain fans took to the streets across France to celebrate the club's dominant 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final on Saturday, and deadly chaos reportedly ensued.
A 17-year-old boy died after being stabbed in the chest in the town of Dax, while a 23-year-old man who was riding a scooter in central Paris was also killed after being hit by a car, according to BBC. A police officer was reportedly hit by fireworks, accidentally, at a PSG gathering in Coutances in northwest France and placed in an artificial coma due to eye injuries they suffered, the national police service said, according to CBS.
The French interior ministry said 192 people were injured overnight, with 559 people also being arrested, including 491 in Paris alone. The ministry also stated that 264 vehicles were set on fire overnight, with seven firefighters and 22 police officers being injured.
At least 300 people detained were suspected of possessing fireworks and causing disorder, Paris police said.
In a stunning statement, Nunez said the numbers reflecting the injuries and damages weren't as high as those of the past.
"The toll is lower than what we have seen in the past, but we will never get used to this kind of abuse, with people who only came to commit acts of vandalism and who did not even watch the match, and we will always have a very firm response," Nunez stated. "This is just halftime for us because the PSG players are coming to Paris."
PSG's Champions League trophy parade is set to go on as scheduled on Sunday.
