Settle Down, Everyone. Not Even Pat Mahomes Sr. Believes His Son Is The G.O.A.T.

The most sensible take on Patrick Mahomes’ status among the NFL’s great quarterbacks came from an unlikely source.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has built quite a resume in just seven years in the league. After playing in only one game in 2017, Mahomes has earned a Pro-Bowl selection in all six years as a full-time starter. He’s also won two AP MVP Awards, and won a pair of Super Bowl rings. Not bad for a guy who’s only 28.

With all those accomplishments comes a lot of praise. But frankly, some of it is unjustified.

Despite Mahomes not being in his thirties, we’ve already got people like Stephen A. Smith, Dan Orlovsky, and Jemele Hill already saying he’s the greatest player ever. It seems like people are so desperate to hand out these types of titles to players these days, and it really cheapens greatness in the process.

Now, I’ve already written on why I believe this narrative is at best premature. Even if he defeats the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, he'll have less than half of the rings Brady won in his career. Without wanting to tear down Mahomes or what he’s accomplished, he’s got a long way to go to reach the true G.O.A.T.

But don’t take it from me. Take it from Mahomes’ dad, Patrick Mahomes Sr., who earlier this week claimed his son had a ways to go before he reaches the G.O.A.T. conversation.

"That's still to be determined," Mahomes Sr. said. "He still has a ways to go. I have mad respect for Tom Brady and I grew up as a Joe Montana fan. [Patrick] is on the right trajectory, but right now, I would still say those guys are better."

Finally, someone with common sense has entered the chat.

Of all the quarterbacks in this generation who could surpass Brady as the G.O.A.T, Mahomes has the best chance. He’s got the same relentless motivation that made Brady great, along with extraordinary talent. Like the elder Mahomes said, he’s on the right path to reach that lofty status.

But two Super Bowls (as of right now) doesn’t get you a seat at the table of the greatest to ever do it. He’s got at least a decade more of being able to sustain this excellence to prove where he stands among the greats of the game. Even Mahomes Sr. understands that.
