Michigan DL Coach Resigns After Arrest

Michigan defensive line coach Greg Scruggs informed the university of his immediate resignation, five days after his OWI arrest.

The Wolverines hired Scruggs on March 7. Scruggs was off to the races once he arrived in Ann Arbor, abandoning his post after two weeks.

Scruggs was arrested on March 16. He was stopped by police around 2:45 a.m. and attested to drinking at two Ann Arbor restaurants before driving, according to Ann Arbor Police Department authorities.

The coach took two field sobriety tests. His blood-alcohol levels tested double the state limit, .16 and .17. Michigan suspended Scruggs and the coach issued an apology.

As OutKick's John Simmons reported, Scruggs has a bit of a history with drinking and driving. Playing for the Louisville Cardinals in 2011, Scruggs was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Scruggs went on to get drafted in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks.

Scruggs arrived at Michigan after working a season as Wisconsin's DL coach and the New York Jets' assistant defensive line coach in 2022.

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore confirmed Scruggs' resignation on Thursday. Moore deferred questions regarding Scruggs as the university handles the matter. As relayed by The Athletic, Moore commented on Michigan's circumstance with Scruggs.

"That’s life as a head coach," Moore commented.

Moore enters his first season as HC, succeeding Jim Harbaugh's nine-year run Ann Arbor.

"You’re going to deal with ups and downs," he added. "Things are going to happen. You’ve got to be able to improvise and adjust, and we’re ready to do that."
