Miami Paid Mario Cristobal Record Amount Of Money To Win Just Five Games

Mario Cristobal was paid a staggering amount of money in 2022, and didn't win many games along the way.

Cristobal is entering his third year with the Hurricanes after being snatched away from Oregon to revitalize the program he once played for. The Hurricanes went 7-6 last year, which was two more wins than the team's 5-7 2022 season.

There's no question Cristobal hasn't gotten out of the gates as fast as he'd hoped, but at least he's making a ton of money along the way.

In fact, he pulled down a record amount of cash in 2022.

Mario Cristobal made shocking amount of money in 2022.

Miami paid Cristobal a shocking $22.7 million in 2022, according to a federal tax form obtained by USA Today. His compensation included $7.7 million in base pay and $14.9 million in "other reportable compensation," according to the tax forms reviewed by USA Today.

The outlet reported that the 2022 earnings for Cristobal were "the largest-ever, single-year amount for an athletics department employee on a tax form by a private university."

It's not known for sure, but it's the speculation is at least part of the $14.9 million was meant to cover Cristobal's $9 million buyout for leaving Oregon.

Now, I'm sure you're probably thinking Miami must have gotten a solid return on this historic investment. You'd be wrong.

The Hurricanes won just five games in the same year the program paid Cristobal $22.7 million. My quick math skills tell me Miami paid Cristobal $4.54 million per win in his first season with the program.

Imagine writing the largest check for a private athletic department in the history of college sports and winning five games. That has to be a tough pill for anyone to swallow, especially the Miami boosters who undoubtedly dipped into their own pockets.

The good news Miami has shown a little improvement, but certainly not enough to justify the massive cash that's been paid to Cristobal. He better hope 2024 goes well or the seat will start getting hot.
