Several LIV Golfers Hit With Food Poisoning Ahead Of Season Opener In Mexico, Social Media Reacts Accordingly

It sounds like a number of LIV golfers may have disregarded the memo about not drinking the water in Mexico ahead of the circuit's season opener in Mayakoba.

According to multiple reports, several players, caddies, and managers reported being ill on Thursday, a day ahead of LIV Golf Mayakoba's opening round. There were rumors of the first round of the event being postponed and perhaps even some players withdrawing from the event, but Sports Illustrated's Bob Harig reported that the show will go on as scheduled.

There has not been official word as to what the illness affecting players may be, but it's a safe bet to assume it's a bout of food poisoning. The Mail has reported that the majority of players in the tournament field are staying at the same resort this week.

Andy Johnson of The Fried Egg was quick to point out that LIV held a party in the lead-up to the event earlier in the week, which feels noteworthy given the food poisoning developments.

This wouldn't be the first time folks visiting Mexico have gotten bitten by the food poisoning bug, nor will it be the last time.

Funny enough, LIV's most recent and biggest signing, Jon Rahm, voiced his displeasure about the lack of toilets on the golf course during PGA Tour events before making the jump to the Saudi-backed circuit. Let's hope for the sake of tournament organizers that there is an adequate number of facilities for players to use this week in Mexico.

While anyone who has had the pleasure of battling food poisoning will attest that it is no laughing matter, golf fans on social media certainly had fun with the situation unfolding in Mayakoba.
