Lewis Hamilton Says His Move To Ferrari Was Kept So Secret Even His Parents Didn't Know It Was Coming

The 2024 Formula 1 season is underway with Bahrain Grand Prix happening on Saturday. So, drivers are doing some of their first big interviews of the year, and, of course, one of the big topics was Lewis Hamilton's stunning off-season announcement that he'll be wearing Ferrari red in 2025.

Now, the seven-time champion is opening up a bit more about the decision-making process, which it turns out was very secretive. We were all well aware of the secretive nature of this decision, but I don't think anyone would have thought that it was so on the down-low that even his parents had no clue it was coming.

Hamilton explained this in a podcast interview with the BBC.

"I didn't speak to anybody. I didn't tell my parents till the day of it being announced. So, no one knew,'' Hamilton said, per Sportsnet. "I really wanted to do it for myself. Ultimately, I had to find out what would be the best for me.''

You've got to respect that. Of course, when you're 39-years-old you don't have to tell mom and dad anything. I'm just more surprised that he was able to keep it a secret.

Keeping a secret is tough in this day and age. I mean, how many people have had their spots blown up by texting the wrong group chat? It wouldn't be crazy to imagine a scenario where Lewis thought he was messaging Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur and accidentally sent it to his dad.

Plus, if you watch F1 with any regularity, you'd recognize Hamilton's dad, Anthony. He's a pretty common presence around the paddock and has obviously been massively supportive throughout his son's historic career.

Hamilton said it all happened so fast that he just needed to make a call.

"I mean, the opportunity just popped up and I was like, `OK, I've got to think for a second,''' he explained. "(But) I didn't have a lot of time to think and I had to just go with my gut feeling and I decided to take the opportunity.'"

We'll see how it pans out, but Hamilton's last season with the Silver Arrows is off to a decent start. Hamilton topped the timesheet in FP2 ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix. And his teammate George Russell was right behind him in P2.
