Lewis Hamilton Makes First Statement Since Bombshell Ferrari Move Was Announced

The Formula 1 world is still buzzing from the news that seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes following the upcoming 2024 season and race for Ferrari beginning in 2025.

That's one of the biggest moves the sport has ever seen, and on Saturday, Hamilton himself issued his first comments since the news broke.

Hamilton posted a lengthy statement on social media in which he confirmed the news… which was already confirmed in multiple other places, but still nice to hear from the dude who made the decision.

"It’s been a crazy few days which have been filled with a whole range of emotions," Hamilton wrote. "But as you all now know, after an incredible 11 years at Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, the time has come for me to start a new chapter in my life and I will be joining Scuderia Ferrari in 2025."

Hamilton talked about what a tough decision it was to part with Mercedes, and I don't think a lot of people remember just how long the two have formed a partnership. Sure, Lewis joined the Mercedes F1 team in 2013, however as he mentioned in his post, the company was supporting his career during his days at McLaren and even when he was still karting.

"Mercedes has been a huge part of my life since I was 13 years old, so this decision has been the hardest I’ve ever had to make," he said. "I’m incredibly proud of all that we’ve achieved together and I’m very grateful for the hard work and dedication of everyone I have worked with over the years and of course Toto, for his friendship, guidance and leadership."

Hamilton also made it clear that while 2025 is going to be a massive year in his storied career, he's not writing off 2024.

Far from it.

"My focus is on the upcoming season and getting back out on track with Mercedes, he said. "I am more driven than ever, I am fitter and more focused than ever and I want to help Mercedes win once again. I am 100% committed to the job I need to do and determined to end my partnership with the team on a high."

Man, 2024 could be a doozy… however, on the off chance it isn't, we know that 2025 certainly will be.
