Fashion Faux Pas: Jason Day Says He Was Asked To Remove His Busy Sweater Vest At The Masters

We’ve got a fashion controversy at The Masters, folks, and the man at the center of it is Jason Day.

On Friday, Day played his round wearing a sweater vest made by Malbon Golf.

How do I know it was a Malbon Golf sweater vest? I don’t know; probably because you could tell from space, what with the giant Malbon Golf iconography.

It sure got people talking, and some of that talking must have been done by some of the powers that be at Augusta National, because while talking to the media, Day said that he was asked to remove the offending sweater vest.

"Are you talking about like Augusta in general?" Day said, when asked about the club’s penchant for being a little restrictive when it comes to attire. "Yeah, they asked me to take it off — the vest off yesterday."

Not the vest… not the vest!

However, Day seemed to take this in stride. He was asked for confirmation that the offending article of clothing was, in fact, the busy vest, and he said that it was.

"Yeah, the busy one. Respectfully, you do that because it's all about the tournament here, and I understand that," Day said. "I respect the tournament. That's what we're here to do is try and play and win the green jacket."

Yeah, I agree. You won’t be mad about your sweater vest getting shot down if you leave Augusta with a much better piece of clothing when the weekend draws to a close.

Having said that, I can’t figure out what is wrong with that vest. Sure, it’s a little busy. "Subdued" is not an adjective anyone would use to describe it, but it doesn’t have some kind of intricate, nonsensical pattern like a Dan Flashes shirt.

Day himself wasn’t even given an explanation as to why his vest was no longer welcome on the course.

"I don't know. I didn't ask. They said, can you take it off? I said, yeah, no worries," Day said.

Credit to him for making a fuss, but I feel like if you were just out there minding your own business — wearing a sweater vest — and someone told you to take it off, you’d want answers.

Smart on Day’s part to pick his battles.

He said that he only wore the vest because that's what he had been "scripted" to wear by his sponsor.

Well, moving forward, I guess they'll learn that busy sweater vests are no bueno.

Now, I'd be remiss if I didn't throw this in after all the vest talk…
