Jared Goff Shares Blunt Message For The Media
Jared Goff would like the media to chill out.
The Detroit Lions are coming off the best season in franchise history in the modern era of pro football in America. The team advanced all the way to the NFC Championship Game before falling to the 49ers in heartbreaking fashion.
Despite being up by 17, the Lions found a way to throw it away. As a Lions fan, it was absolutely crushing.
Jared Goff doesn't want the media to be so negative.
One of the issues surrounding the team in Goff's mind is the fact the media is negative, despite a high level of success. He absolutely cooked a reporter in January when the guy claimed the Lions were good, but lacked the star power of the 49ers.
Now, he's asking the media to stop chasing clicks and start focusing on the positive.
The Lions QB said the following on the Willbo's "Trading Cards" podcast when talking about the media, according to ESPN:
"I have this like, I probably need to drop it pretty soon here because I'm hopefully gonna be in Detroit for a long time, but I have this thing with our local media where like they almost like relish in negativity at times. And maybe that's what gets clicks and that's what sells, but it's no longer what they need to live in. Like, hey guys, we have a good team. We've had success. We can be happy about that, we can celebrate that and not have to write about how we're constantly the underdog. No, teams are gonna be gunning for us now. We won the division and all that. I'm probably overthinking it in my head and it's the chip on my shoulder and the competitor in me."
It's hard to disagree with Goff's assessment of the media - both locally and nationally. The clop above captures what he's talking about perfectly.
People love negativity. I don't know why, but it's true. The media especially loves negativity. There's an old saying in the news business:
"If it bleeds, it leads."
It's a simple concept. People love watching carnage and pain. While not a perfect description of the Lions, Detroit has been a joke for decades, and it seems like it's hard for some people to shake the perception that's dogged the team.
Well, it's a new era in Detroit with Dan Campbell and Goff leading the way. The Lions are no longer a joke. The franchise is a legit contender, and the media should start acting like it. Let me know what you think about Goff's assessment of the media at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
