Houston Texans WR Stefon Diggs Reportedly Spends $100k On Jersey Number Swap With Teammate

Stefon Diggs’ move to the Houston Texans from the Buffalo Bills is a fresh start for him in more ways than one.

The wide receiver finished his final season in Buffalo with 107 receptions for 1183 yards and eight touchdowns. Despite a respectable year, reports have emerged that suggested the relationship between Diggs and Bills quarterback Josh Allen was rather rocky. By all accounts, it seemed like a split between Diggs and Buffalo was the best move for both sides.

When the Texans officially signed the wide receiver, many assumed that Diggs would wear his typical number 14 for his jersey number. He had worn those digits since his rookie season in 2015, and many thought slot receiver Alex Bachman would give him the number.

But Diggs had other ideas in mind.

Turns out, the wide receiver wanted No. 1, and decided to pay defensive back Jimmy Ward (the previous owner) the right to the coveted jersey. He wanted it so bad, he gave Ward $100,000 for the number.

Houston gave Diggs a one-year, $22.5 million contract, so $100k is definitely pocket change for him. But still, that's a lot of dough for just a number.

Diggs comes in with a chance to not only wear No. 1 for Houston, but transform the wide receiver group into No.1 in the NFL. He’ll join forces with Tank Dell and Nico Collins to form a dynamic trio for quarterback C.J. Stroud that could wreak havoc on opposing secondaries. Time will tell if they can make Texans fans’ dreams of their offense a reality.
