Greg Sankey Responds To Speculation Of Super League Forming
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey doesn't seem interested in discussing the formation of a possible college football super league.
There's been growing chatter about major college football programs breaking away from the SEC. Concerns with the NCAA's influence, money payouts, NIL and simply being too big to control have motivated some to argue a breakaway is inevitable.
Speculation was sent soaring when a document allegedly showing a potential breakdown of a super league was leaked by Sportico.
The authenticity of the document hasn't been confirmed directly by any major college football power players, but it sent the media and fans into a frenzy.
Now, Sankey - someone definitely in the know - has responded by brushing it all aside.
Greg Sankey addresses super league speculation.
"The fact that people have interest in throwing ideas out, that's up to them. I spend my time on what I have to do," Sankey told the media Wednesday after the College Football Playoff spring meetings, according to ESPN.
Well, that certainly doesn't sound like a man giving much credibility to the idea the creation of a super league is right around the corner.
He also pressed back at the idea college sports are in trouble, and further told the press, "You can use the cliché, 'If I was buying stock, I'd buy stock in college sports.' Well, apparently a lot of people believe that outside of college sports. Something's going right," according to the same report.
If Sankey does know anything, he clearly has no interest in showing his cards. He gave the most vanilla comment possible but pretty much disregarding the entire topic. Does he really not know anything or is this some solid acting from the SEC commissioner? Let me know what you think at David.Hookstead@outkick.com. All I know is despite Sankey's comments, I don't see chatter and discussion about a super league going away. College sports are in an unprecedented fluid state, and people are unlikely to give up the topic.
