Wisconsin Basketball Coach Ripped For Fire Alarm Joke After Embarrassing Loss

Greg Gard is the internet's new target after cracking a joke about the fire alarm fiasco during Wisconsin's loss to Indiana.

The Badgers lost Tuesday night 74-70 to the Hoosiers at Assembly Hall, and just as Wisconsin got on a run to tie up the game, the fire alarm in the arena went off.

The Big Ten matchup was paused, the arena was evacuated, both teams were sent to their respective locker rooms and play resumed after the all clear was given.

Indiana was able to eventually pull away after regaining momentum, and it was the latest humiliating loss for Greg Gard and company.

Greg Gard dragged for fire alarm comment after Indiana loss.

The Wisconsin coach made a bit of a wisecrack about the interesting timing of the fire alarm - a joke many were making - and that's apparently not okay with people who take themselves too seriously.

"I thought it was a great timeout from whoever from Indiana pulled the fire alarm for them because we were making a run," Gard said before cracking a subtle smile.

Due to the internet being a very dumb place, people had to react like Gard was blaming the fire alarm for the loss (he was not), and the reactions poured in.

You're certainly not going to find me defending Greg Gard and what the Wisconsin Badgers have become over the past month, but people need to relax. The tweets above are just a sampling of people roasting him for his comment.

It's the definition of an overreaction. Does anyone really think Greg Gard blames a fire alarm for losing to a bad Indiana team? Did the fire alarm play bad defense at the end of the game? Did the fire alarm miss shots? Of course not. The team simply got out-played when it mattered most in the final stretch of the game.

The idea Gard doesn't know that and is instead seriously blaming a fire alarm is just not rooted in reality.

There's plenty to criticize Greg Gard on. Trust me, I'm often among the most vocal when he deserves it, but people need to crack a beer and relax. The overreaction to his offhand remark is hilarious and completely unnecessary. Let me know at David.Hookstead@outkick.com if you agree.
